os_anm is a lo-resolution pixel animation tool. It is partly based on two 'old time' digital media: the lo-resolution of early computer terminals and 'teletext' [a digital information system available on British television channels], and the command-line interface of UNIX and DOS. It takes the functional limitations which characterised the look and feel of such systems as conscious aesthetic parameters from which os_anm is developed.

slateford are using their residency on variablemedia.org [January - March 2003] to develop os_anm from a basic 'software sketch' into a standalone piece of software. Functional snapshots of the project development will be available in the form of Java applets, and downloadable source-code. A development kit will be available to enable people to add to or develop variations on the core system. Both the sourcecode and develoment kit will be available from the development section.

Animations can be made in os_anm or hand-coded. See the tutorials for information on how to do this. os_anm supports its own scripting language. The commands for this are explained in the anm script section.

A list of existing animations can be viewed in the anm movies section. New animations can be added to this directly from the os_anm applet. Hand-coded animations can be added through the upload section.
